Make background color for plots selectable

Description
I like the blue background for plots in our applications, but there are some that don't (Tran, Tom). I think we should make this selectable. Our applications could potentially store this preference somewhere (maybe using the java Preferences feature, which we use for remembering dismissed license/disclaimers).
We should also think about PDF export...should the background color be included? Not including it would make Tran's life a lot easier. Ned, what do you think?

The color never bothered me because I can always change it in Adobe Illustrator.
